Sacked Josh McDaniels to return to New England Patriots

This week, discussions between the Patriots coach and owner Robert Kraft are set to determine the trajectory of the team and Belichick’s involvement. Kraft and Belichick had an initial conversation on Monday, and it’s anticipated they will meet again, as per league sources. No decision from Kraft was anticipated on Monday.

For Belichick to secure his role, he must present a comprehensive plan to drastically enhance the team’s on-field performance, especially after the Patriots’ lowest record (4-13) during Kraft’s ownership. This plan may involve reuniting with former Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels, as sources familiar with the situation suggest McDaniels could be a potential return candidate.

McDaniels, who has had two separate stints with Belichick spanning nearly 19 seasons, was dismissed as head coach of the Raiders in October. Despite this, his strong relationship with Belichick persists, and McDaniels has long been one of Kraft’s favored members within the organization.

The Patriots’ underwhelming offensive display stands out as the primary cause behind consecutive below-.500 records. Belichick delegated former defensive coordinator Matt Patricia to oversee the offense in 2022 and brought back former offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien in 2023. However, the team finished the season ranked 31st in scoring (13.9 points per game), marking their lowest standing since the NFL expanded to 32 teams in 2002.
