Robert Griffin calls for Sack of Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy; say it’s a “culture changer”

Less than 24 hours after falling short of reaching the NFC Championship Game for the third consecutive year, despite finishing the season with a 12-5 record, there is a growing chorus calling for the dismissal of Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy.

One prominent voice in favor of a coaching change is former Washington Commanders quarterback Robert Griffin III, now an NFL analyst. In a video posted on his X account Sunday night, Griffin not only advocated for McCarthy’s removal but also proposed a replacement: Deion Sanders, currently the head coach at the University of Colorado.

Griffin emphatically stated, “I know who (the Cowboys) need: (they) need coach Prime (Deion Sanders). Coach Prime knows how to win in Dallas, he knows what it takes to have a championship mindset. He knows how to hold his guys accountable and he is a culture changer. … No coach will make Jerry Jones more money than coach Prime. Deion Sanders will have the Dallas Cowboys high-stepping towards a Lombardi (trophy) in no time.”

Despite Sanders expressing no interest in leaving college coaching for the NFL, the 56-year-old presents a compelling option for the Cowboys. During his playing career, Sanders excelled as a star cornerback for Dallas from 1995 to 1999, boasting impressive statistics, including 159 tackles, 14 interceptions, four All-Pro selections, Pro Bowl appearances, and a Super Bowl championship.

While Sanders has only four years of coaching experience, he has garnered attention for his success. He revitalized the Jackson State program, leading them to 27 wins, two bowl appearances, and an impressive 23-3 record in 2021 and 2022, after inheriting a team that went 4-8 the year before his arrival.

In his inaugural year at Colorado, Sanders guided the Buffaloes, previously 1-11, to victories in their first three games and a No. 18 ranking in the AP polls. Despite finishing the season 4-8, Sanders secured the No. 4-ranked transfer portal class, adding 22 players, including six former four-star recruits.

Griffin III believes Sanders would be an ideal hire for the Cowboys due to his track record of building successful programs, his connections with top college football players, and his potential to bring in his son, Shedeur Sanders, as the quarterback of the future. Griffin stated, “Coach Prime is also going to bring you your quarterback of the future. Yeah, that’s right — Shedeur Sanders. I’m a Dak guy; I love his game and I think the Cowboys can win a Super Bowl with him. But if Coach Prime becomes the head coach, you better believe he’s going to go get his son to come with him.”
