Yet Another Blow to Alabama as Shining Star Defensive Back Caleb Downs Enters Transfer Portal
Alabama suffered a significant blow to its roster on Wednesday morning, as highly-regarded freshman defensive back Caleb Downs is reportedly set to enter the transfer portal, according to information from On3. This decision comes within the 30-day window initiated after former Alabama head coach Nick Saban’s announcement of retirement last week.
During the 2023 season, Downs showcased an exceptional performance, standing out as one of the most impressive freshmen coached by Saban. He achieved notable statistics, registering 107 tackles and becoming the first freshman in the school’s history to lead the team in tackles. The margin between Downs and the next Alabama player in tackles, Deontae Lawson, was considerable, with Lawson recording 67 tackles. Additionally, Downs contributed with a forced fumble and two interceptions.
The recognition for Downs at the end of the season was extensive, earning him the title of SEC Freshman of the Year by both the Associated Press and SEC coaches. He received the designation of Freshman All-American and was honored with the Shaun Alexander Freshman of the Year award by the FWAA, recognizing the best freshman in college football. Notably, Downs was also named a second-team All-American by Sporting News and the AP, distinguishing him as the sole freshman in the country to receive such recognition on the first or second team.
Downs would join six other defensive backs – Earl Little, Kristian Story, Jake Pope, Dezz Ricks, Antonio Kite, and Trey Amos – in entering the transfer portal.
While Downs retains the option to return to Alabama, it would necessitate an extraordinary recruitment effort from head coach Kalen DeBoer and his staff to bring him back into the fold.
