Big Win for the Ohio State Buckeyes as No.1 Player in the Transfer Portal, Ex Alabama Star DB Caleb Downs moves to Ohio

Caleb Downs, ranked No. 8 in the Class of 2023 and the top player in the transfer portal, has chosen to transfer to Ohio State following an impressive freshman season at Alabama, according to his father, Gary Downs.

Despite being a Georgia native, it was anticipated that Downs would favor his home state for his next move. However, contrary to expectations, the SEC Freshman of the Year opted to join the Ohio State Buckeyes, a team actively acquiring talent and coaching staff during the current offseason. Downs played a pivotal role in Alabama’s successful season and journey to the College Football Playoff.

“We’re not starting from square one of recruiting,” noted his father, expressing familiarity with many coaches due to their extensive experiences. He emphasized that there are specific criteria Downs is considering in his decision-making process.

Following Saban’s retirement, Alabama players were given a 30-day window to make themselves eligible for transfers, prompting several standout players to explore new opportunities rather than continue under DeBoer.

Rated as a five-star prospect by 247Sports, Downs made an impactful start in the season opener for Alabama, living up to the expectations set during his high school career. Concluding the season with 107 tackles and two interceptions, he earned accolades such as CBS Sports Freshman of the Year, All-SEC second team, and SEC All-Freshman team recognition.

Downs showcased his exceptional skills with a coverage grade of 88.9 from Pro Football Focus, the highest among all safeties in the SEC. Notably, he became the first Alabama freshman in program history to lead the team in tackles. Additionally, Downs demonstrated promise as a punt returner with an 85-yard return touchdown against Chattanooga on Nov. 18.
