Novak Djokovic is on Course for his 25th Grand Slam Title following His Impressive Victory over Tomas Martin Etcheverry at his 100th Australian Open Match
Novak Djokovic marked his 100th match at the Australian Open with an impressive victory over Tomas Martin Etcheverry, securing a place in the fourth round. The top-seeded Djokovic displayed his finest form in the tournament so far, defeating the 30th seed 6-3, 6-3, 7-6 (7-2). The win keeps the 36-year-old on track for his 25th Grand Slam title, surpassing the all-time record held by Australian Margaret Court.
Djokovic expressed satisfaction with his performance, stating it was the best he had played during the tournament. In the next round, he will face France’s 35-year-old Adrian Mannarino, who secured a victory over Ben Shelton in his third consecutive five-set match.
Djokovic’s milestone marks him as the first man to play 100 matches at all four Grand Slams, with 92 victories in Melbourne, 108 at the French Open, 103 at Wimbledon, and 101 at the US Open. Despite distractions in his initial matches, including sets lost against Dino Prizmic and Alexei Popyrin, as well as a confrontation with a fan, Djokovic displayed a clinical performance against Etcheverry.
Facing the Argentine, who had previously defeated Andy Murray and Gael Monfils, Djokovic dominated from the baseline, breaking Etcheverry in the sixth game of the first set. The Serb continued his command in the second set, breaking early and producing impressive shots, including a trademark backhand winner.
Although Etcheverry put up a stronger fight in the third set, Djokovic secured victory in a tie-break without facing a break point throughout the match. Djokovic expressed contentment with his overall performance, acknowledging the elevated level of play from his opponent in the third set.
