Losing the Cotton Bowl: A Blessing to Buckeyes; Ryan Day’s New Squad National Championship Top Contenders Courtesy of Lessons Learned from the Missouri Defeat

After a disappointing conclusion to their 2023 season with a loss to Missouri in the Cotton Bowl, the Ohio State football team faced widespread criticism, with calls for Head Coach Ryan Day’s removal gaining momentum. Responding to the mounting pressure, Day took swift action by tapping into the transfer portal to bolster his team’s roster.

Since the ill-fated Cotton Bowl defeat, the Buckeyes have secured six impactful transfers, including Julian Sayin, a 5-star quarterback from Alabama, standout defensive back Caleb Downs from Alabama, Quinshon Judkins, a distinguished SEC running back from Ole Miss, Seth McLaughlin from Alabama, dual-threat quarterback Will Howard from Kansas State, and tight end Will Kacmarek from Ohio.

Moreover, key players such as TreVeyon Henderson, Emeka Egbuka, Jack Sawyer, JT Tuimoloau, and Denzel Burke have opted to return, forming a formidable core for the upcoming season. Numerous reports have positioned Ohio State as the frontrunner for the 2024 title, underscoring the team’s potential to reclaim glory.

In a notable coaching reshuffle, Ohio State has enlisted Bill O’Brien as the new offensive coordinator, relieving Ryan Day of play-calling duties. The Buckeyes have also parted ways with Special Teams Coordinator Parker Fleming, welcoming Matt Guerrieri as the Safeties Coach. While Corey Dennis transitions from quarterbacks coach, his continued involvement with the program is expected.

With these changes and a renewed focus on strategic recruiting, Ohio State aims to enhance its overall performance and create a more well-rounded team.

As the Buckeyes gear up for the 2024 season, the collective efforts of a revamped coaching staff, talented returning players, and impactful transfers have instilled confidence that Ohio State is not just a contender but a force to be reckoned with on the path to a National Championship.
