Jannik Sinner defeat Novak Djokovic in Australian Open semi-final

Serbia’s Djokovic, 36, lost 6-1 6-2 6-7 (6-8) 6-3 to the Italian , Sinner, 22, as Sinner regrouped from not taking a match point in the tie-break.

Sinner’s display of confidence disrupts Djokovic’s longstanding dominance, particularly at Melbourne Park, where the younger generation has struggled to challenge the world number one.

It ends Djokovic’s bid for a record-extending 11th title and a 25th major to put him clear of Margaret Court.

While Djokovic’s greatness in technique, fitness, and mindset has been a factor, the significant barrier has often been opponents’ ingrained deference. Despite Djokovic’s 33 consecutive wins in Melbourne, Sinner, armed with recent victories at the ATP Finals and Davis Cup Finals, approached the match with a belief that has eluded many.

Although previous wins were over three sets, Sinner showcased growth by dismantling Djokovic in a convincing manner over five sets. Reflecting on lessons from a Wimbledon defeat, Sinner acknowledges it’s all part of his learning process.

With Djokovic ousted, the Australian Open men’s singles trophy is assured a new name. While neither Sinner nor Zverev has reached the final before, the two-time runner-up, 27-year-old Medvedev, remains a formidable contender. Sinner, expressing joy and confidence, looks forward to his first final, fueled by his recent success against top players.
