New York Jets To Sign Veteran QB to Replace Aging Aaron Rodgers as Backup QB
As the 2024 season approaches, Aaron Rodgers, who will be 40 and recovering from a significant Achilles injury, makes the backup quarterback position crucial for the New York Jets.
Reports suggest the Jets are set to address this need in the upcoming offseason. ESPN’s Rich Cimini indicates that the Jets plan to reevaluate their depth chart behind Rodgers, considering acquiring a veteran backup and potentially selecting a quarterback in the middle or late rounds of the NFL Draft.
Zach Wilson’s stint as the primary backup in 2023 proved costly for the Jets after Rodgers sustained an injury in the first game. Wilson, the No. 2 overall pick in the 2021 NFL draft, went 4-7 as a starter, throwing eight touchdowns and seven interceptions.
The Jets, facing challenges due to quarterback injuries in consecutive seasons, are unlikely to use their No. 10 overall pick for a quarterback if they seek depth. Instead, they may explore mid-round options. Cimini also mentions Gardner Minshew and Jacoby Brissett as potential veteran choices over Wilson.
With uncertainties surrounding Wilson’s performance, the Jets are keen on bolstering their quarterback options to ensure a reliable backup behind the seasoned Aaron Rodgers.
