Patriots 10-time Pro Bowl special teamer and Receiver Matthew Slater announces retirement
One of the most iconic players in New England Patriots history has decided to retire.
After an illustrious 16-season career, special teams stalwart Matthew Slater bid farewell to the NFL, all while donning the Patriots’ uniform.
Reflecting on his journey, Slater remarked, “For the past 25 years, with 16 devoted to the New England Patriots, I’ve been immensely fortunate to embody the values instilled in me, starting from the fields in Meridian. Football has been more than a game; it’s been a vehicle for growth, teaching, and personal development.”
From his humble beginnings in 2008 to his retirement in 2024, Slater’s experience surpassed his wildest aspirations. A three-time Super Bowl champion, he established himself as a premier special teams player, earning an impressive 10 Pro Bowl selections and five All-Pro nods (including two first-team distinctions). Widely regarded as the epitome of excellence in his craft, Bill Belichick hailed Slater as the ultimate core special teamer in NFL history.
Although primarily listed as a receiver, Slater’s impact extended far beyond traditional statistics. With 191 tackles, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery, and even a memorable 46-yard reception on eight targets, his versatility and dedication were evident throughout his career.
