Steelers may be bidding for Sam Howell to strengthen their QB position
The Pittsburgh Steelers have been associated with a potential quarterback acquisition this offseason, and recent developments involving the Washington Commanders suggest another name could enter the fray.
As reported by FOX Sports’ Ralph Vacciano, the Washington Commanders are entertaining the idea of trading quarterback Sam Howell during this offseason, generating interest from multiple teams. Despite Howell’s impressive statistics last season—3,946 passing yards, 21 touchdowns, and a 63.4% completion rate—he also led the league in interceptions with 21. Vacchiano notes, “Multiple NFL sources believe several teams would be interested in trading for the 23-year-old,” speculating that Washington could fetch a third-round pick or more for him around the draft.
Should the Steelers pursue a quarterback trade involving early draft picks, it might not involve Kenny Pickett, typically projected as a fifth-round pick. Instead, reports suggest they could explore acquiring Chicago Bears’ quarterback Justin Fields for a similar compensation. However, if the price drops significantly and the Steelers seek additional quarterback competition alongside Pickett, they might reconsider. Presently, it seems improbable that Pittsburgh would offer anything close to a third-round pick for Howell.
