NFL star and Super Bowl champion Coleman Shelton becomes a free Agent
NFL star and Super Bowl champion Coleman Shelton has decided to become a free agent, waking up unemployed after opting out of his contract with the Los Angeles Rams. Shelton, along with Rams right guard Kevin Dotson, is preparing to explore free agency.
Shelton, aged 28, exercised a clause in his contract allowing him to void the final year of his deal at SoFi Stadium. He had signed a two-year extension worth $3.2 million with the Rams last offseason, with the option to void the second year. Having played over 55 percent of offensive snaps in 2023, Shelton activated the clause.
Despite the Rams having ample cap space of over $40 million, there is optimism within the organization that Shelton will agree to a new contract. General Manager Les Snead has indicated that negotiations are underway, emphasizing the importance of both sides exploring the market to ensure a mutually beneficial outcome.
In addition to Shelton, Kevin Dotson, the Rams’ right guard, is also expected to enter free agency. Shelton’s journey to the NFL saw him go undrafted in 2017 before landing with the San Francisco 49ers and later the Arizona Cardinals. However, it was with the Rams that Shelton truly found his footing in the league.
Standing at 6-foot-4 and weighing 299 pounds, Shelton has seen his playing time increase steadily each season with the Rams. He played in all 17 regular-season games in 2021, culminating in a Super Bowl victory for the team. Despite starting every game in 2023, Shelton has opted to explore opportunities in free agency.
Throughout his NFL career, the Los Angeles native has earned a total of $6,927,280, according to Spotrac.
