Early Lineup Adjustments and Roster Moves: Padres Consider Ha-Seong Kim for Leadoff Spot

Ha-Seong Kim is under consideration for the leadoff position, particularly against left-handed pitchers, as the Padres embark on early adjustments to their lineup. Manager Mike Shildt revealed the team’s strategy to afford Kim an opportunity at the top against lefties.

Despite Tatis Jr.’s success as a leadoff hitter, the Padres are contemplating the prospect of having him bat lower in order to maximize RBI opportunities. Shildt emphasized the significance of another player stepping up to get on base if Tatis Jr. isn’t leading off. Kim, coming off an impressive offensive season, is showcasing strong performance in spring training with a .400 batting average and four walks in 15 at-bats.

Shildt acknowledged the potential for Kim to lead off against left-handed starters during the regular season, highlighting the experimental nature of spring training lineups. The manager values the lineup’s versatility and the chance to explore various configurations.

On the roster front, the Padres acted swiftly by assigning outfielder Bryce Johnson, right-hander Matt Festa, and left-hander Ryan Carpenter to minor league camp. This move trimmed the number of players in the big-league camp to 47, a figure typically seen later in March. Shildt recognized the imperative need to streamline the roster promptly, given the imminent departure for South Korea on March 13.

Reliever Yuki Matsui, recovering from a back strain, is anticipated to join Wednesday’s workout and might participate in two exhibition games before the season opener. Starting pitchers Joe Musgrove and Michael King are slated for a “B” game against the Rangers, offering valuable playing time. While the Padres strive to finalize their active roster before the first game, they have flexibility with three additional players until MLB’s official opening day on March 28. This allows more time for decisions on certain players without resorting to minor league options.
