Gregg Scruggs suspended indefinitely following his DUI Arrest

Michigan football’s newly appointed defensive line coach, Greg Scruggs, has been suspended indefinitely following his arrest for allegedly driving under the influence in Ann Arbor early Saturday morning. Scruggs, 33, was brought on board by head coach Sherrone Moore on March 6 as part of a revamped defensive coaching staff, having previously coached at the University of Wisconsin and the New York Jets.

According to Chris Page, strategic communications manager for the Ann Arbor Police Department, Scruggs was arrested around 3 am for OWI (Operating While Intoxicated). In response to the incident, Moore issued a statement acknowledging Scruggs’ mistake and announcing his suspension while the matter is under investigation.

The program’s decision to suspend Scruggs comes as they await further details of the incident, with the athletic department taking a zero-tolerance stance on such behavior. This isn’t the first time Scruggs has faced legal trouble; he was previously arrested in late 2011 for a similar offense while driving in Kentucky, resulting in his dismissal from the Louisville football team during his senior year.

Scruggs later played in the NFL for the Seattle Seahawks and Chicago Bears before transitioning to coaching. If convicted, OWI offenses can carry penalties including jail time, fines, community service, or license suspension. As the Wolverines gear up to kick off spring practice, Scruggs’ suspension leaves a gap in the coaching lineup, underscoring the program’s commitment to accountability and integrity.
