Lee Briers set to leave Brisbane Broncos for new coaching role

Super League legend Lee Briers is set to take up a new coaching role in the NRL next season, joining Wayne Bennett at the South Sydney Rabbitohs, according to reports from Australia.

Briers has developed a reputation as one of the most sought-after and impressive coaches in the NRL after playing a pivotal role in transforming the fortunes of the Brisbane Broncos under Kevin Walters.

While Briers has been frequently linked with a return to the Super League as a head coach, he is now set to extend his stay in Australia. The Daily Telegraph reports that Briers is eager to work under Bennett and further his development as a coach. There is even speculation that Briers could be groomed as a potential successor to Bennett. This mirrors the career path of Kristian Woolf, who is currently the assistant to Bennett at the Dolphins and is set to take over as head coach next season.

If confirmed, Briers’ move to South Sydney means Brisbane will lose two key members of their coaching staff in quick succession. John Cartwright, Walters’ other assistant coach, is also leaving the Broncos at the end of this season to become the head coach of Hull FC.

It appears that Briers is set to follow Cartwright out of the Broncos’ exit door, with his move to a rival NRL club nearing completion.
